The impact of this particular pest is a degenerative, long term reduction in the vitality of the tree, leaving the tree vulnerable to attack from other pathogens. The control of this pest on an annual basis might be aesthetically beneficial but is not entirely necessary for the tree, control on a 3-5 year cycle allows the tree to recover briefly before further damage the following season.
