Pollarding

A management practice where all small diameter branches are removed to a predetermined point on the ‘pollard head’ or main stem.

This willow has been managed as a pollard since a young age, but now requires the regular removal of the limbs due to decay within the main stem. This method of management maintains the size of the tree and can increase the longevity of the tree substantially, provided the regular pruning is continued throughout its life time.
